Sunrise Sunset ?
Sunrise Sunset ?
I was wathching the sunrise last week while driving down the road, it was big bright and orange. Something that happens really quite often in our lives, something we always seem to take for granted. The sun comes up and goes back down. it happens 24/7, 365 days a year. Everyday, no vacation days or sick leave.
Well, this day, this glorious morning, I thought of a time many sunrises ago. A time that was so much easier. A time of life when we as people have a much simplier life. Fourth grade.
It was back in a time of gas crisis and Watergate. I was a bright eyed fourth grader in Mrs. Lombardi's class 1974. Though she wasn't a trained teacher, she was filling in for our first teacher who had left for a undisclosed medical condition(our class said that we drove her to a nervous breakdown). She was probably the best teacher I ever had, Mrs. Lomabrdi. She taught from our books, but more important, she taught life.
Well, during the spring of that year, the government pushed up Daylight Savings Time several weeks. We were now going to school in complete darkness. It was wierd to say the least. Morning recess in the dark. As ten year olds, we thought it was cool.
This wonderful teacher that we had, saw a opportunity to teach, to show us life and the goodness that happens evryday of our lives, The Sunrise. She would take us out form class at just the right time and we would watch the most glorious sunrises ever known to kids. There would be clouds and the sun would rise through them . It, the sun, would welcome us to the new day, with all the wonderful colors. Red, yellow and orange would welcome us each morning. Vivid colors that we had never seen before. What a fabulous time we all shared.
Even to this day, many more moons and sunrises have passed. I have yet to see sunrises like the ones experinced as that young, little fourth grader, wide eyed and ready to learn. Never knowing what we were really being taught. Finding out it was life,Thirty years in the making.
